Logon Problems
Problem: The computer is telling you that either your username is wrong or password
Solution: Check the format of your username. It should be LastNameFirstName. Don't use punctuation in yourname. If your name is Sal Bento-Vecchio use BentoVecchioSalvatore as your username. Remove all spaces before and after your name. Make sure that your password case is correct. Check the CAP LOCKS key to make sure that it is not on. An indicator light is usually found on the keyboard above the keypad. Usernames are not case sensitive. Make sure that you did not substitute a zero (0) for a letter-O or a 1 for a letter-L. If you did then you are showing your age! Make sure that the Log on to box or Domain box, the third box in the logon screen says CoventrySchools and not the name of the computer. Click the down arrow and change the choice.
Problem: The computer says that the computer account cannot be found
Solution: Sometimes the domain controllers loose the computer's account. Each computer must be registered with the domain, CoventrySchools.net. If the domain controller can't find the computer account it will not let you log on. You must contact a district technical support staff in order to add the computer account back into the domain.
Problem: The computer cannot find the domain controller
Solution: You have lost connectivity to the network. This may be due to a network cable problem, NIC driver corruption, NIC damage, or at the other end with a network appliance problem. Check to make sure that there is a light where the network cable plugs into the the computer. First check rooms around you to see if they are experiencing the same problems. If so see if you can check the hub or switch your cable attaches to is powered on. In must elementary schools these hubs are located in a nearby classrooms. The high school and middle school have them located in locked closets. You may need a janitor or administrator to check it out.
Problem: Conflict with a computer having the same name
Solution: Every computer on the network must have a unique name. Sometimes computers are inadvertently given the name of another. The naming scheme in the district is school-room_number-computer number. For example if you are in Hopkins Hill room 14 and on the second computer your computer should be named HH-14-02. If it isn't then this computer may have been moved from another location and replaced with a computer bearing the same name. Check that location. You will need a district technology support staff to rename the computer internally. The moral of this is not to move computers around without informing district staff.
Problem: This workstations has the same IP Address as another workstation.
Solution: There have
been times when the domain controllers see the same IP address on two
workstations. This is a rare occurrence and usually means that we need to
reconfigure a network setting. Each computer not only needs a unique name
but also a unique number. These numbers are normally given out by a
server. You will need to call to have district technical support staff
assist you.
